Emergence of Neisseria meningitidis with decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin in Argentina.

چکیده
dissolution and oral bioavailability of different formulations of two essential drugs marketed in Tanzania, the drug content and drug release from all the tested ciprofloxacin formulations were within USP-24 requirements and remained stable during storage at simulated tropical conditions. Oral bioavailability was also not influenced by tropical conditions. The stability of essential drugs (ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, phenoxymethylpenicillin and tetracycline) was not affected during shipment to the tropics after being exposed to much higher temperatures and humidity than recommended by the manufacturer, with temperatures recorded within packs ranging from 23.5 to 42.48C and humidity ranging from 20% to 88%. A controlled longitudinal study on the quality and stability of essential drugs in rural Zimbabwe showed that even under the most adverse tropical conditions, clinically relevant instability of these agents is rare. Evidence of potency is an important aspect to consider whilst procuring data about consumption of antimicrobials in developing countries. However, in order to achieve this, one would have to establish potency for each drug on the market, a difficult, unrealistic and expensive exercise, considering the limited funding for research in developing countries. Otherwise, assumptions would be based on random sampling of imported or locally manufactured drugs. Accurate information relating to national antibiotic consumption would be essential in order to extrapolate the impact of these storage issues.

Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Neisseria meningitidis, Delhi, India
Decreased susceptibility of Neisseria meningitidis isolates to ciprofloxacin emerged from an outbreak in Delhi, India. Results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the meningococcal isolates to ciprofloxacin and further sequencing of DNA gyrase A quinolone-resistance-determining region confirmed the emergence of ciprofloxacin resistance in the outbreak.
متن کاملEmergence in Italy of a Neisseria meningitidis clone with decreased susceptibility to penicillin.
A rise in invasive diseases due to Neisseria meningitidis C:2b:P1.5 with decreased penicillin susceptibility occurred in Italy during the last 2 years. Real-time PCR identified the Peni phenotype, and the penA sequence revealed the mosaicism of the gene. Molecular analyses assigned the isolates to a single emergent clone of the hypervirulent A4 cluster.
متن کاملPopulation-Based Surveillance of Neisseria meningitidis Antimicrobial Resistance in the United States
Background. Antimicrobial treatment and chemoprophylaxis of patients and their close contacts is critical to reduce the morbidity and mortality and prevent secondary cases of meningococcal disease. Through the 1990's, the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance to commonly used antimicrobials among Neisseria meningitidis was low in the United States. Susceptibility testing was performed to asce...
متن کاملSepticemia Caused by Neisseria meningitidis With Decreased Ciprofloxacin Susceptibility: The First Case Report in Korea.
Dear Editor, Several antibiotics are currently used for meningococcal prophylaxis, including ciprofloxacin, rifampin, and ceftriaxone. Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, is often used in adults because of its convenient single-dose regimen. In contrast to an emerging trend worldwide, ciprofloxacin-resistant Neisseria meningitidis has not been reported in Korea [1, 2]. We report the first instanc...
متن کاملMeningococcal disease: history, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, antimicrobial susceptibility and prevention.
Meningoccocal disease has repeatedly caused outbreaks worldwide. There has been sudden surge of cases of meningococcemia and meningococcal meningitis in early 2005 in Delhi, India and neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. As of June 17, 2005, 429 probable cases of meningococcal disease have been reported in Delhi out of which 128 cases have revealed microbiological evidence of Neisse...
متن کاملPhenotypic and Genotypic Characteristics of Neisseria meningitidis Disease-Causing Strains in Argentina, 2010
Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of 133 isolates of Neisseria meningitidis obtained from meningococcal disease cases in Argentina during 2010 were performed by the National Reference Laboratory as part of a project coordinated by the PAHO within the SIREVA II network. Serogroup, serotype, serosubtype and MLST characterization were performed. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration to penicill...
